Breathing…a-a-h-h good

We take breathing for granted.  We are not taught to think about it.  I have found that if I pay attention to it there is a calming effect that expands to my environment.

The average respiration rate for a person at rest is about 16 breaths per minute.
This means on average, we breathe about 960 breaths an hour,
23040 breaths a day,
840,9600 a year.
If a person lives to 80, then that means on average they will take 672,768,000 breaths in a lifetime!

Even now as you are reading this you are most likely more aware of your own breathing.  It is a rebirth of sorts every time you breathe in and breathe out.  It is nearly impossible to pay attention to your breath while thinking of something else.  This is why it is the focus for meditation.  It centers you and prepares you for the day.  While I am not the best meditator, it is amazing how many times throughout the day I will stop and breathe consciously.  The calm and relaxed feeling that accompanies this is amazing!  The reverse is also true in an emergency, or high stress situation our breathing gets short and we feel tension, worry and panic.

One other thing, breathing is something every living being has in common.  Try focusing on your breathing for one hour, or one day and let me know your results.  I think you may be thrilled with what you discover.
